My Honest Review of the Bambaw Razor

In this review, I will share my honest thoughts on the Bambaw Metal Safety Razor for 2023.

As I work to reduce my reliance on single-use plastic, I have switched from conventional disposable plastic razor to disposable safety razor.

Disposable plastic razors are designed with planned obsolescence and the intention of being replaced frequently, making customers purchase them repeatedly. While businesses may claim this is profitable, it is not environmentally sustainable.

I previously owned the Bambaw Bamboo Safety razor, read my honest review here. I was so impressed with the bamboo version that I decided to try out the metal version by the same brand! If you’re interested in hearing more, keep reading!

Why Choose Bambaw Razor over Disposable Razor?

I can confidently say that I will never return to disposable plastic razors after using a double edge razor for an extended period. There are a few reasons why I feel this way. Here are some of them.

Cost-Effectiveness

While the initial investment for a safety razor may be higher, it will ultimately save you money in the long run since you only need to replace the double-edged blade, not the entire razor.

A double edge razor is more expensive than a disposable plastic razor or cartridge razor blades initially, but it lasts a lifetime. You only need to purchase the replacement blades, and they are cheap!

Disposable razors, on the other hand, must be continuously purchased, which can add up over time.

Environmentally-Friendly

Reusable double edge razor is more environmentally friendly than disposable plastic razors because they produce less waste. Disposable plastic razors are designed to be used for a short period and then thrown away, contributing to a large amount of plastic waste.

Unlike traditional razors, metal double edge razor can be used for an extended period, and only the blades need to be replaced, leading to less waste overall. They are also made of durable materials which is brass metal, which means they have a longer lifespan.

Using a reusable double edge razor can help reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Reduce Risk of Ingrown Hairs and Razor Bumps

Using a safety razor for shaving is beneficial for your skin because it has only one blade, which cuts the hair at the skin level resulting in less skin irritations associated with shaving.

Contrary to popular belief, having more blades on your shaver does not make shaving more effective. Plastic razors often have multiple blades that can pull and tug on the skin, leading to irritation. The multiple blades also cut the hair underneath the skin, resulting in ingrown hair.

According to my personal experience, using a double edge razor has helped reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs and razor bumps on my skin. However, it’s important to note that everyone’s skin is different. Some people may still experience irritation with a double edge razor.

Metal safety razor components

Made from High Quality Metal

The Bambaw metal razor consists of three different parts, the handle, razor head and razor blade.

The razor head and handle are entirely made from brass and are often considered the highest quality because brass is known for its durability.

The high quality metal is resistant to corrosion and can withstand regular wear and tear, making it a good choice for a metal razor that will be used frequently.

Shaving Made Easy with Nicely Weighted Handle

A nicely weighted brass metal razor can make shaving easier because you don’t need to apply as much pressure to the skin. The razor’s weight helps to do the work for you, allowing you to glide the razor over your skin, resulting in a close and smooth shave.

This can be especially helpful for people with sensitive skin or prone to irritation. The weight of the brass metal razor can help to evenly distribute the pressure, making it easier to achieve a close and smooth shave without causing any discomfort or irritation.

Spare Parts are Available

Spare parts are available on the Bambaw website, which is helpful for you to easily maintain and repair your metal razor as needed in the future.

Although the Bambaw metal razors are durable, they may still experience normal wear and tear or need to have parts replaced over time. The replacement razor heads is available, and you can also purchase the bamboo handle

It is a quick and easy fix to extend the lifespan of your favorite metal razor’s lifespan rather than having to purchase a new model entirely.

How to Care for Your Metal Safety Razor?

Here are some tips on how to care for your metal safety razor:

  • After each use, rinse the blade thoroughly with hot water to remove excess hair and shaving cream.
  • Dry the blade thoroughly to prevent rusting. You can also use blade oil to lubricate the blade and protect it from rust.
  • To clean the handle, use a soft cloth and mild soap to remove dirt or grime. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as these can damage the finish on the handle.
  • Store the safety razor in a dry place, away from moisture, to prevent rusting.
  • If you are not using the safety razor for an extended period, consider removing the blade and storing it separately to prevent rusting.

By following these simple care instructions, you can help extend the lifespan of your metal safety razor and ensure that it continues to provide a close and precise shave.

Bambaw Metal Safety Razor FAQ

How often should I replace the blade on my metal razor?

It is generally recommended to replace the double edge razor blades on a metal safety razor every 5-10 shaves. However, it depends on many factors. I personally replaced my blade after about 5 shaves. The frequency at which you need to replace the blade in your metal safety razor will depend on your shaving habits and the blade you use. Some people may need to replace the blade after a few shaves, while others may be able to use the same blade for several weeks. It’s a good idea to check the blade after each use and replace it when it becomes dull or damaged.

How do I know when it’s time to replace the blade in my metal razor?

You will know it’s time to replace the blade in your safety razor when you start to notice that it is pulling or tugging on the hair rather than cutting it smoothly. If the blade becomes dull or damaged, it will also be time to replace it. My personal tip is when the blades stop giving a clean shave after two glides, it’s time to replace the blades. Also, dull blades will irritate your skin more and worsen razor bumps and ingrown hair.

Can I sharpen the blade in my metal safety razor?

Generally, it is tricky to sharpen the double edge razor blades. Blades are designed to be replaced when they become dull or damaged rather than being sharpened. However, you can extend your razor blade lifespan by stropping. Stropping the blade on a pair of jeans can help to remove any burrs or imperfections on the blade and maintain its sharpness. It is important to be careful when stropping the blade to avoid cutting yourself or damaging the jeans. It is also a good idea to use a pair of jeans that you no longer wear to avoid damaging a good pair.

How do I store my metal double edge safety razor blade?

It is essential to store metal safety razor blades in a dry place to prevent rusting. You can keep them in their original packaging or a small lid container.

Can I recycle double-edged safety razor blades?

Safety razor blades are recyclable, but it is essential to check with your local recycling facilities to determine their policies. Find out if your local recycling center accepts used razor blades and how they should be prepared for recycling.

Can I use any blade in my metal safety razor?

Yes, double-edged razor blade is universal. While it is true that most double-edged (DE) safety razor blades will fit into most butterfly or double-edged razors, it is still important to pay attention to the quality of the blade you choose for your reusable razor. Not all replacement blades are created equal, and selecting a high-quality blade is crucial to get the best results and maximize the lifespan of your eco-friendly reusable razor.
